Fees Affordable in Three Options
Just the gist: If you have a five-page letter from a 19th-century correspondent who filled four pages with complaints about the autumn dampness in Cologne in 1852, you may not wish to pay for that much meteorological detail. In that case I can provide you with just the gist of your document at a nominal flat fee.
Gist plus: If you later decide that you do want every detail, your previously paid fee will be deducted from the comprehensive translation fee.
The works: A complete and accurate translation of your document(s), with transliteration if applicable, at a previously agreed-upon rate.

Fee Structure
My fees are per word, hour, or page, depending on what method is most advantageous to you, the client. A handwritten document in the Old German script on deteriorating paper may take hours to decipher. In that case I charge by the word, rather than the hour.
If your multi-page document is historically noteworthy, fascinating on a personal level, or if it just plain piques my interest, I may offer to translate the first page at no or reduced cost, depending on the length and legibility of the document.
